Introduction

The Qinshan Science and Technology Museum is located between Shanghai and Hangzhou, just a couple of kilometres away from China’s first nuclear power plant. With 25,700 m2, this museum is the largest science museum for nuclear energy in the world. This experience-driven exhibition explains all aspects related to nuclear power; from energy generation, risks and safety to alternative energy and energy‑saving strategies. It also grants a look behind the scenes of China’s largest power plant and how to operate it. Over 40 interactive multimedia installations and 30 models helping visitors understand, the sometimes, complex scientific matters in a hands-on way.

Besides a permanent exhibition, this museum contains a variety of lecture halls, performance theatres and classrooms. It also has an archive for industrial heritage and modern research facilities.

The design makes use of a sleek language that uses simple geometric shapes to define the space. Large scale light ceilings support the impression of a clean scientific environment and create a homogeneous
bright atmosphere. The colour palette, primarily white and light grey hues, is contrasted by bold anthracite surfaces and complimented by a few highlight colours of a blue-greenish spectrum.
