The impression of the natural environment of Murano island is communicated with a selection of materials and colours that expresses freshness and energy. Blue and grey neon signs and the outdoor seats with light grey canopy immediately catch visitors’ attention from afar. Blue terrazzo paired with white terrazzo on the floor remind customers of the gentle waves at the breezy coast of Venetian lagoon. Large windows on both sides generously let in flow of natural light and fresh air. Openness is conveyed also with the choice of furniture. A combination of HAY’s ’13Eighty shell’ collection in chalk white, soft blue and grey is well balanced with the custom-made red oak benches with holes, visually expressing the lightweight and flow of air. The round tables are paired with dusty blue and concrete grey armchairs from HAY’s ‘About A Chair’ collection to accommodate larger groups.
Vibrant blue metal grid hanging from the ceiling puts a spotlight on the bar counter and guides customers’ attention to the counter. The blue colour is extracted from the famous ‘Baicoli’ cookie box from Venice, which is displayed in a showcase at the entrance. Three blue Carnival masks perched on the grid are complimented by photo collage walls with quirky scenes from Venice and Murano. A series of playful illustrations overlaying the photo collage adds an imaginative journey through the cuisines found in Venice and Murano: an astronaut floats through pasta universe while fishing planets out of canal, a diver practices in the aromatic Italian coffee and a bear’s new look at the carnival. Embedding subtle culinary narratives in the space with iconic elements of Venice and Murano island, these illustrations invite customers to explore the space and further enhance the dynamic vibe.
A set of beautiful handmade glass chandelier by Venini, the leading glass company from Murano elevated the space with its exquisitely form and alignment. Originated from Murano, this beautiful piece of art work is the most representative object of glass art in the glass‑themed café. Also a piece of art work inspired by the island is a poem by Italian poetess Alda Merini who puts the inspiration from glass blowing in simple elegant sentences: “Goodbye, glass word. Poets are vases of Murano, beautiful to see but delicate in breath.” This beautiful quote is then made into LED sculptures on the ceiling, illuminating the cafe with the ode to the art of glass.
Offering a diverse seat arrangements, including outdoor seats and family area with kid’s table, Murano Café brings people together for an enjoyable time. As an essential part in the nexus of facilities in the Shanghai Museum of Glass Park, the museum café continues the narrative of glass and extends the cultural experience into a culinary treat with a young, dynamic design language.
