Vans 3.5

COO worked with international cross-functional teams at Vans to enhance their retail systems and elevate the customer experience. By addressing existing gaps and identifying opportunities for improvement, COO developed a comprehensive and adaptable retail system with design guidelines tailored for various store tiers on a global scale, paying particular attention to the Chinese market.

Project Information

A range of innovative facade designs were introduced to serve as both wayfinding and brand impression elements from a distance. For elevated and top-tier stores, primary materials such as anodized black metal or plywood are employed, along with iconic brand statement graphics, including checkerboard patterns and brand heritage images. In line with Vans’ commitment to fostering relationships with the local creative community, these facades also function as canvases for showcasing artists’ work. For street-side flagship stores, COO designed several facade options featuring the brand’s iconic checkerboard motif, executed using perforated metal cubes or dimensional cubes made of anodized metal and lighting.

To establish a versatile and dynamic display system, an assortment of modular fixtures was designed to suit diverse store layouts. Plywood cubes in three sizes can be organized based on campaign and layout demands, while a gondola footwear display system allows expansion according to capacity needs. The wall display system features a modular shelving arrangement with punch hole plywood panels that ensures a clean presentation for a wide array of products while maintaining flexibility.

The updated retail system includes a detailed design guideline outlining materials, visual communication, and display systems that cater to different tiers of retail stores, such as regular, elevated, and discount outlets. This design guideline has been successfully implemented in stores across various regions, with ongoing updates to maintain consistency. It has also been incorporated into the store design for Vans’ first elevated discount store in China.
